There are many ways to create a terrific look for tables for special events. Swagging is a form of draping a table that creates a unique edge around the table that is both beautiful and easy to do once you understand the process.
While swagging often starts with a basic polyester tablecloth that extends to the floor, it can also be done with spandex table covers. For a dramatic look, choose a black spandex table cover as the foundation layer, and then choose a bright, vibrant, or patterned fabric to complete the swag.
The Basics
The first step is to stretch the black spandex table cover over the table and extend the fabric down to the floor to ensure the legs are completely concealed. Next, place the fabric tablecloth you want to swag over the black spandex table cover and position it, so all sides of the table are equally draped. Find the middle of the tablecloth.
Next, from the bottom, place one hand on the inside of the tablecloth to be swagged and one on the outside. Start about seven inches from the bottom and create pleats with your outside hand, moving up the tablecloth and pinching an equal amount of fabric to gather and hold the pleats. Keep the pleats in place with your thumb, index, and middle fingers, alternating up the length of the tablecloth to about two inches from the top.
Finally, flip the fabric over, holding the pleats in place with your outside thumb and fingers, pin the pleats from the inside and allow the fabric to fall back down around the pinned part. Repeat at desired distances around the table.
